Tree change along Red Cedar at Site #1

  • Period: to

    Fall lab 2011

Time period for recorded tree change at Site #1 along Red Cedar. Our hypothesis is that the leaves willl change color and ultimately fall off. This process is predicted to be over by the end of November.
  • Purpose

The Red Cedar River is constantly at the hands of Mother Nature. Our hypothesis is by the end of the timeline there will be no leaves and little life. Site 1 is one of four major sites that were designated at the beginning of lab. The ultimate goal is to show difference in plant and animal life at site 1 over the course of a couple of months. The ultimate goal of the timeline and pictures is to compare number of leaves, color change, and recorded life over a semester.
  • Week # 1 / Site #1

    Week # 1 / Site #1
Lush trees with light and dark green leaves. There were ducks swimming and loudly quaking. The current seemed strong and the ducks were fighting to swim. The river was clear with no debris.
  • Week # 2 / Site #1

    Week # 2 / Site #1
In week #2, we see some color change. A few leaves have now changed to yellow. The river is beginning to be covered in leaves and sticks. Ducks were still loud and plentiful. The current was similar to that of week #1.
  • Week #3 / Site #1

    Week #3 / Site #1
The leaves for the most part are still a lighter green altogether with the already yellow as seen in week #2. The water was not as clear and appeared muddy. There were no ducks at this site this week. The water was clear with a weak current.
  • Week #4 / Site #1

    Week #4 / Site #1
In week #4 we see bare branches with missing green leaves along with yellow leaves. The current was strong and there was one duck. This week the water was clear.
  • Week # 5 / Site #1

    Week # 5 / Site #1
There were no ducks at Site # 1. There were observations of live however. Jacob was seen taking a sample. The leaves here were yellow and light green. There were still branches with little to no leaves. Water was clear with some debris such as sticks.
  • Week # 6 / Site #1

    Week # 6 / Site #1
At site # 1 today there is no life. The leaves have a yellow tint along with light green leaves. There is evidence that more leaves are gone from branches. Water was clear with a weak current.
  • Week # 7 / Site #1

    Week # 7 / Site #1
A hypothesis that there would be no life and no leaves on branches proved to be correct. We see that there are no longer leaves on branches and no life present. We are now into winter and little life will be present until Spring. Water was clear, but was higher than usual.
  • Conclusion

In conclusion, the hypothesis of life over the semester was as expected. The assertations were proved right over the course of the semester ultimatly proving mother nature's control. Note that some extra observations such as water height, clearity of water, and current were mentioned. These extras observations were simply notes that were not weighted in our hypothesis. Overall, we observed the transformation of the river from Fall to Winter.
