    First Africans Arrive in Jamestown
    Brought on accident by Dutch and sold to Virginians. This would eventually lead to the Civil War.
  • The Cotton Gin

    The Cotton Gin
    Eli Whitney patented the Cotton Gin, revolutionizing the prodution of cotton by increasing the speed of seed removal. This expanded the demand for slaves and made cotton King of the south. Thus leading to the Civil War.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    In 1820, the Missouri Compromise, submitted by Henry Clay, proposed that Missouri enter the United States as a slave state and Maine enter as a free state to avoid inbalance of power in the Senate. This caused the Civil War because it showed how serious the issue of slavery was.

    The Sack of Lawrence and Massacre of Pottawatomie set off a brutal guerrilla war in Kansas. By the end of 1856, over 200 people would be killed in cold blood. No compromise would be made, and showing that both sides were willing to fight, causing the inevitable Civil War.

    Ruled that Scott was black and not a citizen therefore he had no right to sue for his freedom. This decision also declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, which led to the Civil War.
