While the initial sketches were made by Lord Pirrie and Bruce Ismay, it was in the drawing rooms at Harland and Wolff where the total vision of the new liners was conceived. Under Thomas Andrews’ design direction, the highly-skilled draftsmen drew sections of the ships to scale, piece by piece on the floor of a huge loft room. From there, the men used the enormous drawings to make wooden templates which were then used to shape each piece of the ship’s steel frame.
