Timeline of the Phone

  • Telephone

    The first phone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The user would speak into the mouthpiece and the electric current from the sound waves would carry it to the the receiver
  • Rotary

    The Rotary was operated by rotating the dial to the number you wanted. This was quite slow and tedious.
  • Candlestick

    The candlestick was separated into 2 pieces, the mouthpiece and a receiver which was placed on your ear during the phone call.
  • Answering machine

    This allowed callers to leave a message if the caller couldn’t receive the call.
  • Push-button

    The push-button had a keypad to dial numbers which would transmit a frequency to the operator.
  • Portable phones

    These phones were no longer attached to cords from the phone’s base station.
  • Caller ID

    The convenience of Caller ID was the user no longer had to memorize phone numbers.
  • Motorola DynaTAC

    This was the 1st mobile phone and had the maximum of 30 minute talk time.
  • Motorola StarTAC

    The Motorola StarTAC was the 1st successful flip phone.
  • Nokia 5110

    This phone was shaped like a candy-bar and had a long battery life.
