Booth and his fellow conspirators plan to kidnap the President for ransom for Confederate Army Prisoners. Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, David Herold, Samuel Arnold, and John Surratt conspire with Booth. Their plot will not be carried out.

Late Morning:
While picking up his mail at Ford's Theatre, John Wilkes Booth overhears that the President will be at the evening's performance. He spends eight hours plotting with Atzerodt and Powell.
10:13 pm:
At the theatre, Booth shoots President Lincoln during the performance of "Our American Cousin". Lincoln is taken to Petterson Boarding House accross the street. Booth breaks his lag but escapes on horseback. -
4 am:
Booth traveling with Herold arrives at Dr. Samual Mudd's house in Southern Maryland where Mudd sets Booth's leg.
7:22 am:
President Lincoln is pernounced dead. -
Church services are packed with mourners dressed in black. Preachers compare the death of the President to Jesus.
Booth and Herold spend the first of five days hiding in a pine thicket, near the Potomac River in Southern Maryland. Searching for the fugitives, Union soldiers come close. -
Investigators receive a tip that leads to the arrest of Lewis Powell and other conspirators.

A funeral service is held for the late President at the White House. Thousands of mourners line the streets.

Five days after the Prsident's death, authorities haven't found Booth. Police arrest George Atzerodt in Northwest Maryland.
Still hiding in thicket, Booth is given a newspaper and shocked to the nation's response to his crime.
Around 10:30 pm:
Booth and Herold attempt to row across the Potomic, but in the dark, end up back in Maryland. -
President Lincoln's funeral train departes Washington for twelve days while people mourn.

Booth and Herold finally get to Virginia. Three Confederate soldiers help them cross the Rappahannock River, and the fugitives find shelter in a barn owned by Richard Garrett.
In Maryland, Authorities arrest Dr. Samual Mudd. -
Acting on tips, the Union troops persue the fugitives to Garrett's farm.

Union troops surround the farm, and Herold surrenders. Booth refuses, and the troops light the barn on fire. Booth is shot in the neck, and dies.

Eight defended stand trial for President Lincoln's murder. Four will be found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. The remaining four will serve prison sentences at Fort Jefferson, a Union prison during the Civil War.

Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt are hanged at the Old Arsenal Prison in Washington D.C.
