Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Sugar Act of 1764

    Sugar Act of 1764
    Designed to increase Britain's earnings. Its intent was to rebuild the British treasury. The colonist did not like this act at all. They boycotted products such as sugar and they also brought products into other countries illegally.
  • Stamp Act of 1765

    Stamp Act of 1765
    This act placed a tax on all different printed items in America. The colonists did not like this act either, It made them violent and enraged. They protested and protested and then eventually succeeded and the act was repealed in 1766.
  • Quartering Act 1765

    Quartering Act 1765
    The goal of the Quartering Act was to end the costs of military in the Americas. British thought it was only fair for there to be no costs if they were protecting the people in the Americas anyway. The plan was for there to be change every two years but the act was repealed 5 years later, in 1770.
  • Townshend Acts of 1767

    Townshend Acts of 1767
    There were measures placed to raise money to pay the governors and others in the colonies. Duties were placed on tea, lead, paint, glass, and paper. Customs service was improved in the colonies. Parliment repealed the act on the same day as the Boston Tea Party.
  • Tea Act of 1773

    Tea Act of 1773
    No new taxing was placed on tea thanks to the Townshend Acts. The Tea act was created to lower the prices. "Taxation without representation" was pushed throughout the colonies. Parliament repealed this act in 1778 during the taxation of colonists act.
