Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The novel is about a slave, Uncle Tom, and it talks about a slave's life and a slave's death. This would cause tension between the North and South. The novel would cause the North to strengthen its opinion about slavery and how it should be abolished, and in the South, it led to them being mad since it would misrepresent them. The novel would show the reality of slavery and would cause tension between the two sides and led to the Civil War. -
The Republican Party was formed in Ripon, Wisconsin, from the former members of the Whig Party, since they wanted to establish a new political party in order to oppose the spread of slavery in the western territories. Kansas would be a free state. This made the tension grow as the proslavery wanted it to be a slave state, with the way the South was being violent, the North was more against slavery, which would lead to the war. -
The Brooks-Sumner incident was when Senator Charles Summer delivered his speech about the “Crime Against Kansas”. Representative Brooks was related to one of the men that Summer could talk about and insult, and he would beat him nearly to his death with his cane, which would break with how hard he hit them,” in the Senate. This would cause the Northerners to be in rage, and the Southerners would send Brook canes to replace the ones he had broken during the fight, and said to beat him again. -
The Election of 1856 was between the Democrat, James Buchanan, who defeated the Republican, John C. Frémont, and the American Party,Millard Fillmore. James Buchanan won the election due to strong support from the South, and most Northerners expected New England. Also, this would be the first time the Republican Party is in the election. This would lead to the election of 1860. This would lead to the war as it would divide views. -
The Supreme Court case Dred Scott was a slave who was in a free territory, could not be a citizen, so could not sue the federal court, and declared that it was unconstitutional for Congress to prohibit slavery in the territory under the Missouri Compromise. This would please slaveholders, but it destroyed the idea that slaves could be limited by federal law. It would cause a debate about the Civil War. -
The LeCompton Constitution was drafted by proslavery forces, and forced Kansas to legalize slavery even though the citizens did not make a decision on that since they had chosen for a free state. President Buchan backed it, but Congress would balk at the idea of admitting Kansas as a slave state. Kansas voters would reject this constitution. It would show how divided over slavery they were. -
The House Divided Speech was the acceptance speech of the Illinois Republican for the Senate, in which Lincoln warned the country about how the country is unable to always keep a half slave and half free, as that would cause problems, so one had to win or be destroyed. Lincoln would not win, but this would show how a war is necessary in order to organize this conflict about slavery. -
The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were a series of seven debates between Lincoln, who argued that slvaery is wrong and should not expand, and Douglas, who argued that popular sovereignty. Lincoln would pull a trap on Douglass to respond to free doctrines, and Douglass responded with yes, which can be stopped if laws did not support it. This would cause him to lose support. This would cause Lincoln's reputation to soar. -
The Harper's Ferry raid was led by John Brown and 21 followers. Their goal was to arm the enslaved people and lead them to freedom. This raid would be a failure as Brown was captured, and men were captured by U.S. Marines under Colonel Robert E and executed for treason. -

Even though his raid was a failure, it showed how his beliefs were stronger since he believed it was the right thing to do, as slavery is a sin, and this would cause more tension between the North and South and led to the war. -
The Election of 1860 had four different candidates, since there was the Republican, Lincoln, Northern Democrat, Douglas, Southern Democrat, Breckinridge, and the Constitutional Union, Bell. Due to the fact that there are a lot of divisions between the states, there were two Democrats. Everything would be divided. Lincoln would have won this election due to his win in every free state, but not the slave states, and the rise of the Republican Party. This would cause tension to build. -
Lincoln's 1" inaugural Address was Lincoln's speech about not interfering with slaverly where it is already at so that it would not cause conflict, and vowed to protect the Union, and warned that secession is illegal. Lincoln tried to reassure Southerners that he would be doing his duty in upholding the law. -
The Secession would be the first formal break from the Union by South Carolina due to the hostility of the Northerners towards the slave states and Lincoln's election. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas would follow with South Carolina. Delegates would meet in Montgomery, Alabama, to write a constitution on protecting slavery and elected Jefferson Davis as the president of the Confederate States of America. This would lead to the Civil War.
