Nancy Cartwright released her book How the Law of Physics Lie in 1983, where she made the argument that when people use the “law of physics” they do not describe the real systems within the field. Instead, they are “describing the behavior of highly idealized fictional systems” (Godfrey-Smith, 2003).

At “The 26th Biennial Meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association” in October of 2018, Nancy Cartwright was awarded the Carl Gustav Hempel Award for her lifetime scholarly achievement in the philosophy of science (Cartwright, 2019).
