Timeline 1763 - 1774

  • Proclamation of 1763

Also known as the Royal Proclamation of 1763 didn't allow the colonist from expanding westward into territories such as the Allegheny Mountains, Florida, the Mississippi River, and Quebec. This upset many colonists as they believed that their right to expand to the west was taken from.
  • Sugar Act

This act would make it illegal to get foreign rum. This act would enforce the tax on sugar, rum, molasses, and many other goods causing the colonies to not be able to smuggle sugar and molasses goods from the Dutch and French. This act ended up making many New England merchants protest it. These merchants were worried that this act would ruin their bussiness.
  • Currency Act

This act would not allow the colonies to make a new bill or make already existing bills. This upset the colonies as they already had a shortage of currency and making bills help combat this. The colonies would protest in response to the act.
  • Stamp Act

The Stamp Act would add taxes on all newspapers government documents, playing cards, dice, almanacs, and pamphlets. This grew to be very unpopular among the colonist. They would end up protesting the act and trade between the colonies and its mother country would begin to decline. This would also begin the discussion of taxation without representation.
  • Quartering Act 1765

The Quartering Act would make it so colonies are obligated to provide housing and food for the Briitish troops that are in the colonies. This would irritate the colonies as they didn't like being forced to house these troops.
  • Declaratory Act

The Declaratory Act would increase the power of the Parliament over the colonies. It made all laws binding to the colonies "in all cases whatsoever". This obviously upset the colonist as the Parliament gain more control over the colonies.
  • Townshend Act

The Townshend Act would obligate the colonies to pay import duty on tea, glass, oil, lead, paper, and paint. This would again upset the colonist as they saw this as the Parliament overreaching with their power.
  • Boston Massacre

After Britain sent troops to enforce the acts that had been passed colonists begin to harass these troops. The British troops end up firing at the crowd of colonists. Five people are killed from this event.
  • Boston Tea Party

At this event, a group of 150 protesters dressed as mohawk Indians got on three ships in the Boston harbor and dumped 342 chests of tea. This demonstration would waste 18,000 pounds worth of tea.
  • Intolerable Acts (Coercive Acts)

The Intolerable Acts closed the Boston Port until the tea that was dumped was paid for. This would destroy the economy of Boston as they relied heavily on the port.
  • Quartering Act 1774

This new Quartering Act would force the colonist to house and feed British troops in their private homes.
  • Quebec Act

The Quebec Act would increase the boundaries of the province of Quebec south to the Ohio River. This caused trials without a jury, as it gave Catholic Church semi-established status. This would threaten the colonies' expansion to the North and Northwest.
