    A request by slave holding Missouri to join the union.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Slavery should be prohibited in any land that was aquired from Mexico. Gained territories of California and New Mexico, no slavery
  • Compromise of 1850

    Henry Clay presented a multi-part plan to settle all issues dividing congress
  • Fugitive Slave Walk

    Required all citizens to catch runaway slaves, north convinced more people to end slavery. Northern juries refused to convict those accused of breaking the slave law
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin which stunned people with her description of slavery. Thought to have started the war, showed how horrible slavery was.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Brought in Kansas and Nebraska. Upset Compromise and unbalanced Free states and Slave states
  • Bleeding Kansas

    People who were against slavery and those who supported it moved to Kansas to vote but there was a lot of blood shed. It was the first place where blood was spilled over slavery.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott went to a trial for his freedom from Irene Emorson. He didn't win in court but later in life gained his freedom. Did not win court because slaves weren't citizens.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    The debate between Lincoln and Douglas, Douglas wanted to keep slavery but Lincoln wanted to end it. It was the South's introduction to Lincoln and they feared him.
  • Harper's Raid

    John Brown and his men assist runaway slaves and launch attacks on slave holders or... That was the plan. Many were inspired by his statememt before he died. That's when the Civil war started.
  • Lincoln Election

    He was elected and it pushed the south toward secession.
  • South Secedes

    The South threatened to leave the Union and eventualy did. The states left one by one. Nation headed to war as Lincoln's goal was to preserve the Union.
