    The rise of the British empire in Australia
    The process of colonisation began in 1788. A fleet of 11 ships, containing 736 convicts, some British troops and a governor set up the first colony of New South Wales.

    In the early 1870s the first Aboriginal children are enrolled in the public schools in NSW
  • Aboriginal referendum

    Voting rights for Indigenous people enacted
    The Commonwealth Electoral Act 1962 received assent on 21 May 1962. It granted all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the option to enrol and vote in federal elections.
