WTO Third Ministerial Conference Ends
Police appeared in battle gear; the National Guard was mobilized; extra supplies of tear gas were airlifted in and directed against the protestors. Over 600 protestors were arrested (though most charges were eventually dropped). By the time the WTO delegates went home, protestors had caused over $20 million worth of damage. -

Ahmed Ressam arrested
December 14, US customs authorities had detained Algerian Ahmed Ressam crossing into the US from Canada just north of Seattle with a trunkload of explosives—enough, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) told the mayor, to topple a multi-story building. -
Explosive residue found in trunk of two other Algerians
Authorities detained at the US-Canadian border in Bellows Falls, Vermont, an Algerian man and the wife of another Algerian, whose car was singled out by bomb-sniffing dogs. Only explosives residue was found in the trunk, but the two were being held without bond on immigration violations -

Seattle Mayor Paul Schell called a meeting in the small conference room adjacent to his office. Among those sitting at the table were Mayor Schell, Deputy Mayor Daudon, Deputy Mayor Tom Byers, the fire chief, the FBI’s Mandigo, US Attorney Pflaumer, and Seattle Center Director Anderson plus, coming and going, members of the City Council. -
Seattle's New Year's Eve Celebration
