Thomas Kuhn

  • The Birth of Thomas Kuhn.

    On July 18, 1922, Samuel Louis Kuhn and Minette Kuhn welcomed their son; Thomas Samuel Kuhn into the world. His father (Samuel Louis Kuhn) was an industrial engineer who also served in World War l. His mother was a graduate of Vassar college and heir to a wealthy New York family
  • Kuhn and Harvard

    A straight-A student, Kuhn was admitted to Harvard, his father's Almer mater. He knew eventually he would have to make a choice in majoring in Mathematics or Physics. In his sophomore year in college, America entered into World War ll so he decided to start taking classes in the summer. He eventually got his BS in Physics with highest honors in 1943.
  • War Work

    In the summer of 1943, Kuhn joined the Radio Research Laboratory theoretical group which was tasked with devising countermeasures against enemy radar. He was soon sent to work in a laboratory in the United Kingdom. He later traveled with a Royal Air Force officer to France for a few weeks to study German radar installations.
  • Kuhn PhD

    He eventually went back to Harvard and got his Doctorates in Physics at Harvard in 1949. His thesis was The Cohesive Energy of Monovalent Metals as a Function of the Atomic Quantum Defects. This resulted in Kuhn being elected in the society of Fellows at Harvard.
  • The Copernican Revolution

    While teaching at Harvard, Kuhn taught undergraduate classes that delved into Aristotle's work. He quickly became perplexed with his work. This eventually led up to his first book being published, The Copernican Revolution.
  • Death of Kuhn

    Thomas Kuhn died at the age of 73 on June 17, 1996 in his home he resided in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was battling with with cancer in his bronchial tubes and throat for the past two years before his passing.
