Thematic Timeline

  • The 1600s

    An evening school was established for students who work during the day. The students had to work during the day to help provide for their family, but night school helped them have the chance to work and still have the opportunity to go to school.
  • The 1700s

    Pennsylvania state constitution makes it to where the poorer families receive schooling for free, while the richer families have to pay for their children's education. This made it much easier for there to be all types of people to be able to attend school.
  • The 1800s

    Boston's English High School opens becoming the first tuition-free school teaching no other language other than english. The fact that it being tuition-free alone, allows the rich and the poor to be able to attend school and learn english.
  • the 1900s

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act is passed. This is another way in which the poor are being help. This act helps bring aid to schools that educate the lower class crowd.
  • The early 2000s

    The Zelman v. Simmons-Harris case rules that school voucher programs are indeed constitutional. This helps the parents of those students who earn the grades and their keep at private/charter school, which are not funded by taxes.
  • The Present

    Starting in 2013 there are multiple thousands of teacher cuts and school closures, claiming to not only reduce cost but also improve the quality of education. But the teachers claimed the that the closures are negatively impacting the lower class of student as well as the minority students.
