The second battle of Ypres is when the Germans started using poisonous gas as a weapon. Soldiers were instructed to use gas masks to protect themselves. The French, Australian, Canadian, British, and the Germans participated in this battle. This battle was why the poem “In Flanders Fields”. This is the best known poem about WW1, talking about how Canadian soldiers died to poisonous gas. -
