  • Neoclassicism 1660 - 1798

    Neoclassicism 1660 - 1798
This was made up of 3 parts: the Restoration period, the Augustan period, and the Age of Johnson. Essentially it imitated the style of the Romans and Greeks, what i mean by that is the culture at the time would be describes as "classical" and the writers at the time were obsessed with the art forms of the Romans and Greeks because of its originality.
  • Revolutionary 1765 - 1830

    Revolutionary 1765 - 1830
The revolutionary literary movement incorporates both political and literary writings in colonial and early revolutionary America. Basically the guys who wrote the Declaration of Independence were revolutionary writers.
  • Romanticism 1798 - 1832

    Romanticism 1798 - 1832
Romanticism emphasized emotion and imagination. Eventually, romanticism led to the development of the Gothic novel. A book thats a surprising classic from this era is Mary Shelleys Frankenstein.
  • American Romanticism 1830 - 1865

    American Romanticism 1830 - 1865
American romanticism was predominantly fiction, rather than poetry. Unlike English romanticism, American romanticism had a strong and sometimes morbid interest in history. The clearest and most plain example I can think of is the wild west stories.
  • Victorian(1832 to 1901)

    Victorian(1832 to 1901)
Victorian literature dates to the period of Queen Victoria's reign. The novel came to prominence in this period, and a number of authors showed a growing interest in the grittier aspects of life. The basic idea of the literature was to inspire people to act like gentlemen and ladies.
  • Realism(1865 to 1914)

    Realism(1865 to 1914)
Realists had an interest in everyday life and poverty, it told how things were. Plain and simple. Defined as "the faithful representation of reality" an example would be Tom Sawyer.
  • Post-Modernism (1965 to Present)

    Post-Modernism (1965 to Present)
Postmodernism is a literary movement embracing diversity, word play and other attributes of modern literature. It uses things like fragmentation and paradoxes. My favorite example of this is American Phsyco.
