    When the growth of America started people started to be concerned with the thought of slavery. Northern and Southern politicians were heated over it. Henry Clay came up with the idea that a line should be placed below Missouri, every state below the line was a slave state, and every line above it was a free state. This compromise wouldn't last forever.

    Southern states felt that tariffs were unfair and only supported the north. When South Carolina didn't want to pay the tariffs, they threatened to secede. Henry clay came up with a compromise and lowered the tariff.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    After the Mexican-American War congress couldn't decide whether New Mexico should be a free or slave state. Henry Clay, once again made a compromise between the two sides.California was admitted as a free state, and slave trade was abolished in Washington D.C. New Mexico would be admitted as a slave state. Some people thought this compromise saved the union.

    A law passed by congress in 1850. It permitted the capture of African-American who had fled to the north. This made abolitionist even more angry then they were before about slavery.This made John Brown Raid the slavery owners.

    5000 people from the proslavery state of Missouri voted for proslavery representatives in kansas illegally.The Anti-Slavery government was attacked by proslavery forces. To avenge John Brown Murdered several proslave neighbors
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. He lived in a free territory and should have been free. The judge in the court case said that he was not a resident of Wisconsin. Dred Scott was the property of his owner and lost the case
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown and his sons planned to attack and capture the arsenal. They wanted to capture the arsenal because they hated the idea of slavery. During the attack there were 10 deaths in total. Brown and his men were captured. The abolitionist appreciated John Brown as he was put to death. This made tensions rise of slavery in North America.
  • The Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. In his statements he never said anything about abolishing slavery, even though everyone knew he was Anti-Slavery. Southern states start to secede from the Union, shortly after Lincoln was elected.
