    First Viking Attack
    The first Viking attack on Ireland was in 795 AD. They attacked the monastery at Lambay island off the coast of Dublin. At this time Ireland was a well literate Christian society with no kingship.
  • St Columcille's monastery was burned.

    St Columcille's monastery was burned.
    St Columcille's great monastery at Iona was burned in 802 AD by the Vikings. This was due to conflicting ideas as to who should rule a certain area.
  • Pillage of monasteries and churches.

    Pillage of monasteries and churches.
    Vikings robbed a number of monasteries as they held items of value. They knew many monasteries were built near rivers, therefore they attacked monasteries on the Rivers Liffey, Boyne and Shannon.
  • Creation of Dublin

    Creation of Dublin
    The Vikings settled in an area where there was a black pool, this was area was suited to settlement as there was a water source nearby and easy access to Europe. It was named Dubhlinn (Blackpool) which is known as Dublin today.

    Creation of coastal towns
    The Vikings began to disperse around Ireland, attacking and settling in coastal areas. These coastal areas then became towns known today as Cork, Wexford, Waterford and Limerick.
  • Clonmacnoise attack

    Clonmacnoise attack
    The Vikings attacked Clonmacnoise due to its' close proximity to the River Shannon where they had previously settled. This monastery was pillaged due to the valuables kept in the round tower.

    Danish Vikings
    The Danish Vikings came to Ireland and attacked the Norse Vikings who had settled in Ireland and were now considered the Norse-Irish.
  • Interest begins in British affairs.

    Interest begins in British affairs.
    The Norse-Irish Vikings become interested in Brtiain and as a result complete their last major raid of this period in Ireland. At this stage Viking settlements had grown and were very prominent in Ireland.
  • Recapturing of Dubhlinn.

    Recapturing of Dubhlinn.
    The Vikings recaptured the settlement of Dubhlinn which had been previously captured by the Irish in 902 AD. The Vikings continued to raid inland from their town of Dubhlinn. The Vikings took advantage of anything that may be of use to them in the local environment.
  • Vikings settle in Ireland.

    Vikings settle in Ireland.
    The Vikings finally settled in the lands that they had conquered. They no longer raided in Ireland and instead they developed as traders. The proximity to Europe from Dubhlinn facilitated easy trading.This brought a sense of unity between the Celtic Irish and the Norse-Irish Vikings.
