This is a diary of an army first lieutenant Roy Crowdy Avery that he kept for a short time. His unit was the Bellevue hospital unit. This was the last time that they would see their family because they are still in New York. He said goodbye to his family and they were expecting to leave tomorrow. But then they got on the boats on February 25th.

Getting off the boat and riding a train for a very long time. Barely any sleep because of falling shells. Only eating hard cheese and beans they finally arrived at Vichy. Avery’s unit was the first U.S. troops to enter. They were greeted by only 2 officials there at the moment.

Avery got a letter from Minnie. He received a letter from Dr. Palmer with copies of telegrams that ordered him to Washington to D.C.Army med school. Then on April 1st, he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant sanitary corps. He was to proceed to Dijon for an assignment later. He rode a train to Dijon. It took him 3 days to get there. When he got there he found out it would take 10 days for his orders to get there and he had nothing to do but wait.

Avery finally received his orders and his orders were to go to Baccarat so he went back on a train and he arrived at Baccarat on April 29th. These were the yanks that took over this sector before. So this was more like war he said. Both planes were flying ahead, bombs were dropping and heavy barrages kept up all day. He was starting to become accustomed to the noise and less excited wounded men were all coming in, then he finally went to sleep in spite of all the racket.

Avery got permission for a 7-day leave. Then on October 15th, he went from Paris to Baccara. Then when he was going to town to get verification for an armistice, a Boch plane overtook them on road Capt. Avery and a man named Unger took shelter in a cellar of a house, and a bomb was dropped a few yards from a house nearby. That bomb killed 4 more people and it was the last bomb to drop on Baccarat. But then on Nov 16, 1918, he was sent to the hospital as a patient with influenza.
