    The Beginning of the Renaissance
    At about 1350 the interest in education, art, and science drasticallly increased in many parts of Europe, mostly in the cities and towns. This was the start of a new golden age just like ancient Greece and Rome. It began in the north side of Italy and spread all throughout Europe.

    The Protestant Reformation
    Soon after the Renaissance began, questions began being asked about religion. Some people thought that Popes were more involved in money than preaching. Many times they would well Indulgences, or documents freeing the buyers of it from punishment from their sins. Because some Christians "protested" this way of preaching, they were dubbed the Protestants. They decide to reform, or change, so that event is called the Protestant Reformation.

    The Age of Exploration
    Starting during the mid-1400s, Europeans started to explore outside of its boundaries. This began a golden age of discovery and exploration. Portugal sailed to the south down the Atlantic ocean. In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain sent Christopher Columbus, along with 3 ships, weat along the Atlantic looking for a good spice trade in Asia.

    On this date, Leonardo painted his most famous portrait: the Mona Lisa. It showed his perfection in two painting techniques: Sfumato and Chiaroscuro. Sfumato is where colors are blended smoothly, creating a smoky, ethreal effect. Chiaroscuro uses different shades of light and dark to create a three-dimensional effect.

    Michelangelo Sculpts The Statue of david
    At the age of 26, Michelangelo was given the job of sculpting a statue in Florence, Italy. This statue was one of the most famous in the world! It is called the statue of David. It depicts David before he fights and kills the giant Goliath with one rock. Many artists also sculpted David, but none of them had thought of sculpting him BEFORE his battle.
