The Old Man and the Sea

  • Santiago has gone 84 days without catching a fish.

    He is now considered to be unlucky and is being shunned by the townspeople.
  • Santiago prepares to far out into the sea the next day to fish.

    In order to turn his luck around after his long spell without a fish caught, Santiago is willing to take risks. He is now planning on traveling farther our into the sea in hopes of catching something.
  • Santiago parts ways with Manolin and casts off on his trip.

    This is the last human contact he will have for over 4 days, and his the true beginning to Santiago's adventure with the fish.
  • Santiago notices a large fish and hooks it.

    Our first time seeing the fish, Santiago still thinks that it is just a slightly larger than usual fish.
  • The fish begins to pull the two out to sea

    Now the fight between the two powers in the book has truly begun. Santiago is beginning to better grasp the size of this fish.
  • A small warbler lands in Santiago's boat.

    The fisherman encounters a small bird and thinks about how he is like the bird, just fighting against life.
  • The fish jumps from the water.

    This is our first true look at the majesty of the fish that Santiago is pursuing. Now we know that the marlin truly is a fish to end all fish as Santiago estimates it is twice the length of his boat.
  • Santiago brings the fish in and kills it with his harpoon

    The battle against the fish is finally over, and Santiago sets his sights for home, not feeling triumphant as he should.
  • Sharks begin to circle in on the fish

    When Santiago first appeared to be home free, and to have his trial over, the sharks appear and begin to try to tear away pieces of the fish. Santiago tries with all of his might, but the fish is still eaten.
  • Santiago returns to shore and walks back to his shack.

    The fight is over completely, and Santiago is left exhausted. He stumbles back into his small home both victorious and defeated at the same time.
  • The people of the town see the skeleton of the massive fish.

    The final piece of the story is the skeleton's testament to the old man's fishing prowess. He first set out to prove to others and to himself that he can still fish, and now he has.
