Maple Street, "anytown," U.S.A. It is a textbook, late summer afternoon in this stereotypical American town.
-
Steve and Don see what appears to be a meteor and are transfixed, staring upward.
-
Steve Brand is the "voice of reason" who attempts to make sense of the strange occurrences: electricity malfunctioning, phones are not working, power mowers won't move, and radios are dead. Steve keeps the neighborhood calm, doing everthing to quell the "mob mentality," particulary against Les Goodman.
-
Young Tommy has a wild imagination and claims to understand the objectives of supposed "alien invaders." He is accused of reading "too many comic books."
-
Les Goodman has been the scapegoat who is accused of being associated with all of the idiosyncracies due to the fact that his car is the only one that starts up. Charlie is the catalyst of the mob mentality.
-
The "mob" works its way down Maple Street to see what is lurking in the dark.
-
Charlie, the voice of no reason, jumps to conclusions and shoots Pete Van Horn.
-
After Charlie shoots Pete, paranoia sets in and everybody starts accusing eachother of the existing problems. It turns out that aliens landed on earth and came to the following conclusion: Turn some lights off, create havoc with mechanical devices, and humans will turn against each other.
