Mars Polar Lander
On January 3rd NASA launced the Mars Polar Lander.
The Mars Polar Lander was launched to study the soil and climate of Planum Australe.
Planum Australe is the southern polar plain on Mars.
On December 3rd, 1999 after a decent phase was expected to be completed, the lander failed to reestablish communication with Earth. -
Space Shuttle Mission
October 11th, the 100th Space Shuttle mission was flown.
This Shuttle was lifted of for a 14 day mission to install the Z1 segment, the first piece of the space station truss, and a third docking port (PMA-3) for the Unity adapter. They also test the new 'SAFER' spacesuit backpack propulsion units. -

The 9-11 attacks were a series of 4 coordinated suicide attacks upon the United States in New York and Washington, D.C. 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers intentioally crashed two planes into the Twin Towers in New York City ( American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175), One plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.The fourth jet, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. -

Tsunami

Australian Bushfires
February 7 – The deadliest bushfires in Australian history begin; they kill 173, injure 500 more, and leave 7,500 homeless. The fires come after Melbourne records the highest-ever temperature (46.4°C, 115°F) of any capital city in Australia. The majority of the fires are ignited by either fallen or clashing power lines or deliberately lit. The series of bushfires were called the black saturday bushfires. -
The 2010 Winter Olympics.
The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, were a major international multi-sport event held from February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands, and in the resort town of Whistler. Approximately 2,600 athletes from 82 nations participated in 86 events in fifteen disciplines. -
The Royal Wedding
On the 16th November 2010 Clarence House announced that His Royal Highness Prince William Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton are to be married in 2011. Prince William (who is second in line to the throne) and Miss Middleton became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya. Prince William said that giving Kate his mother's ring was "my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement".
