The Life and Contributions of Neils Bohr (1885-1962)

  • The Birth of Niels Bohr

    The Birth of Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr was born in Denmark to Christian Bohr and Ellen Bohr.
  • The Education of Niels Bohr

    The Education of Niels Bohr
Born and raised in Copenhagen, Niels also attended Copenhagen University for both his Master's and Doctorate degree in physics. From his birth to his receiving his Doctorate only took 26 years.
  • His time with J.J. Thomson

Once Niels Bohr received his doctorate he finally left Denmark to go and study with J.J. Thomson, the physicist that discover the electron. During his time with J.J. Thompson he also got married to Margrethe Norlund.
  • Career: Part I

    Career: Part I
After his time with J.J Thomson he makes his way back home where he then goes to work at Copenhagen University as a professor. He then just after a few years created the Physics Institute within the University.
  • The Atom

    The Atom
Bohr had made his own model of the atom based off the findings of Planck. This allowed the new model to also have set distance, but allowed the electrons to jump or be received based off of the energy being absorbed or released. For his model and discovery he won a Nobel Prize in 1922 at only the age of 37.
  • Liquid Droplet Theory

Bohr started focusing more on the nuclei of an atom rather than the atom itself once he won his Nobel Prize. Just a few years after winning the Nobel Prize he developed the Liquid Droplet Theory. The Liquid Droplet Theory represents the nucleus of an atom via water droplet. This theory was instrumental in the development of the first atomic bomb.
  • Bohr and the Manhattan Project

Since Bohr's atom structure became the future of all quantum theories it is understandable why he was part of the group of scientists who developed the atomic bomb. Under a secret name to protect himself, Bohr helped create the first atomic bomb. However, this was during World War II and Bohr faced prosecution from Hitler. He fled to America where he then worked on the Manhattan Project (the atomic bomb).
