Jurgis Rudkus and Ona Linkoszaite come to America to find a better life. The immigrated to Chicago from Lithuania Lihthnais. It is in Northern Europe, it's the largest of the three Baltic states. With a population of about three million people. -
The Wedding
When they get to America, they have their wedding at a bar in the area of chicago know as Packingtown. They find out their in debt from the wedding. In Lithuania people at the reception have a tradition leave money at the end to cover the cost of everything. In America they don't do that, you have to pay for it yourself. -
Jurgius gets a job at a slaughter house
To cover the debt of the weeding and living in America Jurgis gets a job at a slaughter house in Packingtown. it was rough working conditions and hard work. It didn't matter to him. He knew if you worked hard in America it would pay off. -
Father Dies
Jurgis father who also came to America found it even harder. He was a lot older than Jurgis and the hard work and conditions finally got to him. Soon after he started working there he passed away. Jurgis was crushed and started drinking. -
Jurgis joins a Union
Jurgis joins a union for hope of better pay. He learned a lot about how unions worked. Also how corrupt people are and how political they are. He didn't like how Packingtown was run. -
Ona gives birth to Antanas
They are soon to find out that Ona is pregnant. That brings a lot of problems with Ona. Her job becomes increasingly harder for her and the wroking conditions didn't help much. She gives birth to a boy. Together they decide to name the baby Antanas after Jurgis's dad. -
Jurgius gets hurt at work
Jurgis, while working at his job, falls and breaks his ankle. This ends him up in the his bed for a three month recovery. He couldn't work, so he didn't get paid. This causes major issues for the family. -
Jurgius finds out Ona has been raped
Ona doesn't come home from work one night. When she finally makes it home, she tells Jurgis what happened. Ona was raped by her boss Phil Connor. Jurgis did not know how to handle the news, -
Jurgius attckas the raper
Jurgius attackes Phil Conner, The man that raped Ona. They met each other in a back alley. The cops soon show up and Jurgis is arrested. The unfair trial sentences Jurgis to a month in prison. His family will now have to live without Jurgis's pay. Once he gets out, Jurgis learns his family has been evicted from their house. -
Ona and baby dies
Jurgis has just been released from jail. He finds his family living in the same boardinghouse they lived in whenever they first arrived in Chicago. Ona is screaming and is prematurely in labor. While giving birth the baby kills Ona and then dies. Jurgis once again leaves and begins drinking. -
Antanas passes away
After Ona's death Teta makes Jurgis help his son. Just because his wife is dead, it doesn't mean that he can abandon his only son. He gets a new job at a steel mill. It is when Antanas drown's in mud street that Jurgis no longer knows what to do. He then leaves and goes to the countryside.
