Nic was born
A very special baby was born on July 20th 1982. It was the start to a very intense relationship. His name was Nic. The first born in the family, which makes him, even more special. Both parents were excited and nervous to have to fully dedicate there live to Nic. -
Quality Time with Karen
Nic spends quality time with his mom. Nic doesn't tend to do this often during the course of his life. It was a very relaxing day spent with his mom at the beach. They get into a deep conversation about school. Nic thinks this is the right school for him. Nic makes two friends which he really enjoys being around. He's participating in school events and actually seems really happy. This is a unique event because Nic isn't very happy throughout the course of the book. -
Father-Son Talk
David really starts to worry about Nic. Nic is starting use drugs more and more often. David and Nic sit down and have a conversation about David's past life. Nic finds it really interesting and is very curious. Nic takes this in consideration and doesn't stop using. David thinks this will prove to Nic to stop but he was wrong. Nic keeps using no matter what his dad tells him. -
Caught Missing Curfew
As Nic is attending AA meetings every once in a while, his parents have lied to themselves. David and Karen keeping saying that Nic is such a good kid. It's hard for them to think differently when all of the other mothers are saying "What a lovely boy" and "He's delightful" (Sheff 6). Nic lies to his parents about going to an AA meeting. Nic ends up going somewhere else and missing curfew again. Nic finally shows up at two-thirty and reveals to his dad that he is using again. This upsets David. -
Keeps Getting Worse
Nic has tried almost everything to prevent his drug addiction. Nothing has worked yet but his parents keep pushing their limits to make it happen. Nic spends a lot of time away from home, which obviously isn't good. He becomes friends with a group full of skaters and druggys. David once again tells Nic about the drugs he had done as a kid which truly affected Nic. Nic is actually in shock about what his dad has done. -
Depression/Where's Nic
No one has a single clue where Nic is. It has been days without seeing their precious son. David finally gets a call from Nic saying that he is in trouble. David immediately picks him up. Nic isn't talking much and seems to be depressed. Nic tells his father that he tried crystal meth which, frightens David. Nic also informs his dad that college isn't doing anything for him. This is a huge event because it shows that Nic is starting to try new things. -
Major Concerns
Nic has gone missing once again. He has the family car with him, so nobody has any idea where he is. Karen starts to get really nervous and is thinking about all the possible consequece's Nic will have once he returns. Boot camp, jail, and a lockup school are just some of the suggestions. Nic is in big trouble this time and his parents are starting to lose patience with him. Family is all Nic has, he can't afford to lose it. -
A Simplistic Lunch
Nic meets David for lunch. They choose an easy quiet place to sit down and talk. The lunch doesn't last long because Nic doesn't want to talk. Nic doesn't really care about what's going on with his family. Nic looks and feels terrible at all times now. David still sees hope even though Nic is about as worse as a drug addict can get. -
Surprise
Nic is living his own life. He hasn't been in contact with his family for a while. He finally shows his face at Nancys house. She is very surprised to see him. She asks him a million questions but doesn't really answer any of them. He asks for a banana and then suddenly leaves. This is very ignorant of Nic and doesn't say anything to Nancy. She is pissed and can't believe that Nic would do that. -
The Start of a New Nic
Nic is starting to keep in touch with his dad more frequently now. He is actually going to rehab and revisiting the AA meetings. This is a good sign for his family and for himself. Nic is starting to look and feel better at this time of his life. -
Gone Missing
David hasn't heard from Nic in a while. This is unusual of Nic since he has been doing so well. Nic was last heard from by Z. Z tells Vicki and David that when he called he was high. Nic really doesn't care anymore. He is living his own life and could careless of what anyone thinks of him. Vicki is way overwhelmed and wants Nic erased from her brain. She cannot bear for him any longer and is starting to give up. -
Thought of Mind
Nic is eleven days clean and sober. This is a huge accomplishment for him. Everyday Nic goes through the same thought process. He wants to do drugs but he forces himself to say NO. He is repeatedly thinking he is insane for doing this and very depressed. Once he got addicted to drugs, when he didn't have them it made him sad. Nic is hanging on. -
The End of a Long Adventure
Nic has finallly realized what family really is. All the stupid things Nic presented to his family made them want to quit on him. They never quit. Nic had failed, over and over again. This time he is on his way to succeed. Nic is thanking everyone for supporting, loving, and caring for him. He is truthfully understands his purpose in life now. -
Drug-Free
Nic's mom couldnt be any prouder. Her once newborn has finally stopped causing her problems. It's been Nics one hundred and fiftieth day without using methamphetamine. He has tried everything, but he finally found the formula to the madness. It's been a big achievement for Nic, but also to the entire family. It proves to us that everything can come to an end if you work hard enough. -
Story Time
Nic explains many stories to his mom. He usually talks about drugs and alcohol to his dad but this time is different, Nic becomes very open with Karen. He tells her about all the drugs he has used in the past. She is shocked and doesn't know what to say. He also explains to her what had happened in Paris and Lake Tahoe. Now that Nic is clean these stories are just forgetful memories.
