    After Katniss’s father died, she became the head of the family. Her family went starving but Peeta had the kindness and generosity to take a beating in order to give Katniss two loaves of bread. That gesture saved her and her family’s lives.
  • Katniss's promise to Prim

    Prim made Katniss swear to ‘really really try’ to win the Games. That gave Katniss motivation to keep going, even at the worst times.
  • Mr. Mellark's pre-Games visit to Katniss

    Peeta’s dad came to visit Katniss before the games began. He gave her cookies. This small gesture showed her that the whole District 12 supported her, even her rival’s father.
  • Madge's mockingjay pin

    Katniss’s friend, Madge, stopped by to give her the pin of a mockingjay, prior to the Games. It was a symbol of rebellion to the Capitol. Katniss brought it in to the arena as her token. That pin gave Katniss hope and courage throughout the Games. It was a part of her district, her home, and her sense of rebellion.
  • Cinna's first design

    Cinna helped Katniss many times throughout the book. The first time he helped her was by designing her outfit and look for the chariot ride through the Capitol. He did such a good job that he reeled in many sponsors and made her look amazing. Cinna was also a great friend to Katniss from the beginning.
  • Haymitch's interview lessons

    Haymitch helped Katniss by trying to find her an attitude for the interview. He didn’t succeed, but he tried his hardest because he wanted Katniss to win.
  • Peeta's declaration of love

    During the interview, Peeta declared his love for Katniss. That put Katniss on alert and helped them both get even more sponsors.
  • Rue and Katniss's alliance

    Rue and Katniss became allies which helped them mutually. Rue taught Katniss what she knew about plants. She was also good company and a good friend.
  • Haymitch picks Katniss over Peeta

    Haymitch helped Katniss again by picking her over Peeta. He used their sponsors for Katniss in hope that she would win. Haymitch had more faith in Katniss than he had in Peeta.
  • Thresh at the feast

    Thresh saved and spared Katniss’s life. He attacked Clove who was about to kill Katniss. Just after that he spared Katniss’s life when she told him how she helped Rue.
