Mobile began celebrating what we know as Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday", in 1703. It was a Frech Tradtition and at the time, Mobile was under French ordinances. It was a huge feast on the eve of Lent. The colonials called it "Boeuf Gras".This tradition dwendled off over teh next century and a half.

On New Years Eve night, Michael Krafft "drunkingly" broke into a local hardware store and and gets out cow bells and rakes and parades through the town.
Mobile's rule at the time was to only arrest someone who was "drunk and down". -
Joe Cain is born.

The parades have still taken place each year, but have began to slowly fade away due to the physical and spiritual damage caused by Civil War.

Joe Cain brings it back. He rides on a charcoal wagon dressed as a Chickasaw Indian chief by the name of Slackabamorinico.

Joe Cain appeared for the 3rd time on Fat tuesday at the head of the oranization that he started, "The Lost Cause Minstrels". This group appeared on the streets of Mobile for years.
