  • first start to football pads

    in 1877 princeton football player L.P. smock designed the first pads. they were thin quilted layers sewn on the shoulders, thighs, and knees they werent heavy and they really didnt provide much protection.
  • better pads

    in 1890 saw signifacant changes in football rules and pads. in 1894 the flying wedge formatin was out lawed after it killed 20 players, so the need for better pads was high. manufactures started making leather pads that were sturdy and were sawn on the outside of the uniforms
  • growth of pads

    in 1915 the first helmet was made. the helmet was made of a soft leather and where designed to protect the ears. the ear flaps on the helmet earned them the nick name "dog ear helmets ".

    in 1930 shoulder pads were introduced. thay were seprate pads that covered the shoulder and chest area. they were primarly made of leather and had laces in the front so players could adjust in to there body.
  • more advanced pads

    in 1980 football pads and helmets kept inproving. helmets now had a full sized face mask that prevented face injuries like broken noses ect. shoulder pads were now made of all plastic so they were lighter and stronger. also shoulder oads began to use a cantilevered design that dissipated a hit and it was a reqiurment to wear pads.
