    Jefferson's Impact
    Thomas Jefferson believed the survival of independence and freedom depended on educating all Americans. This concept was quite radical for his time, but it began the changing of the tides, opening the way for public education to come later in history. I think this is one of the most important events in educations history his proposition of 3 years of public school for all Americans was revolutionary, and even though it didn't work in his day, it did open the door for public education.

    In the colonial times education wasnt manditory. In an effort to change that the Northwest Land Ordinance was created. This ordinance said the section 16 in every township in the western territory was to be for maintenance of public schools.

    In an effort to resolve the many different philosophies and questions posed about types of education the committee of 10 was formed by the National Association of Education. This committee provided recomendations to the questions in writen reports. They suggested 12 years of education. they also suggested all students be taught in the same way and to the same extent whether the child is likely to go on to a further education or to be a laborer.

    During the 1900's the population growth was booming, which meant the schools were packed, and many children said they would prefer to work than to go to school it was so bad. During this time education was very much so intertwined with the protestant belief system, which angered many, especially the Irish Catholics.

    In the year of 1954 the civil rights movement began and soon after the war on poverty began with Lindon B. Johnson in 1964. The war on poverty was an effort to help the poor in America. The civil rights movement was an attempt at bringing equality among all races. In my opinion this is one of the most important evens in the history of education, it has made it so that children of all ethnicity's are able to have equal orotundities especially in school.

    The reports of the Soviet Union's successful launch of Sputnik helped spur NDEA. Sputnik seamed to highlight the failures of the U.S education system. President Eisenhower signed into law the National Defense Education Act, which gave alot more national money to the school systems, and education on technology became a push in the name of national security and for science.

    Until this time children with disabilities frequently didn't get educated. Most were put in an institution. This act made it law that all with disabilities get a good public education, and that teachers give accommodations. I think this is one of the most important events in educations history.

    the standards movment began in 1983 when the report of American President Ronald Reagan, entitled a nation at risk came out. Presidents Regan's report began the change of schools, to have higher standards.

    The school choice movement began after the president came out with "A Nation at Risk." School choice was suppose to inject competition into the school system, it was a way for children to choose the school they go to, instead of going to the assigned public school.
