  • The emergence of the "child"

    During the Enlightenment (17/18th century) the concept of a child is born. They were previously treated like small adults. John Locke prepositions that children are born “blank” (Tabula Rasa) and should be provided with easy pleasant books.
  • Children's literature as a distinct genre

    Children's literature became a distinct genre during the Victiorian Era. An example is Alice in Wonderland.
  • The Brothers Grimm and HC Andersen

    The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and HC Anderssen are written. The brothers Grimms work was initially intended for adults but altered to better suit an audience of children.
  • Golden Age

    The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century are considered the golden age of children’s literature.
  • School aid in the US

    1902 state aid for schools and concurrent standardization of curriculums. Robinson Crusoe was introduced as compulsory reading in schools in the US. Peter Pan is also read without the swearing of Hook.
  • The Little Prince

    The little prince is written during The Second World War.
  • Harry Potter

    Books such as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are popular among teenagers.
  • Decline in reading among children

    Sharp decline in reading among children due to tables and smart phones. Thanks for that, Steve Jobs.
