  • Embargo Act of 1807

    Embargo Act of 1807
    President Thomas Jefferson supports passage of the Embargo Act, prohibiting the US from importing or exporting goods to Europe. This led to factories becoming developed in the North, and they started to produce goods.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    This was an attempt by Congress to maintain the balance of slave and free states in the US. It drew a line on the 36, 30' latitude and prohibited slavery north of that line. This was a clear division of the North and the South.
  • Lowell Founded

    Lowell Founded
    Lowell, Massachusetts is founded as a textile production factory town. This is the first manufacturing plant in the US. This is the beginning of the industrialized North, in comparison to the agricultural South.

    Tariff Acts
    Andrew Jackson passed a bill creating a tariff, or tax on imported goods. Since the South primarily relied on Europe to supply them with goods, they hated this act. The North loved this because it forced the South to buy their products or pay extra,
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    After the Tariff Acts of 1828 and 1832, South Carolina passed a law that said the tariffs were unconstitutional and therefore illegal in South Carolina. In response, President Jackson forced South Carolina to pay the tariffs.

    Compromise of 1850
    This was a package of five seperate laws, all regarding slavery. California became a free state, and the Fugitive Slave Act was created.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    This was a law passed a part of the Compromise of 1850. It forced all citizens of the US to assist in finding escaped slaves. This law was hated by abolitionists and led to the creation of the Underground Railroad.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    This decision said that slaves were not citizens of the US, and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and that Congress could not prohibit slavery in the territories.
  • Harpers Ferry

    Harpers Ferry
    John Brown attempts to lead a raid on the Federal Arsenal at Hapres Ferry. He wants to arm the slaves and lead a slave uprising. The plan fails, and Brown is killed.

    Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln wins the presidency in the Election of 1860. The voting draws a straight line down the middle of the US, with Lincoln winning the North and John Breckenridge winning the South.
  • South Carolina secedes

    South Carolina secedes
    South Carolina secedes from the United States and forms its own country. This is the start of the Confederacy. In total, 11 states end up seceding from the Union. This is the start of the Civil War.
