After defeat in India, Pietersen demanded to hold talks with the English Cricket Board over the role of coach Peter Moores. Days later, Pietersen made remarks to the media about there being an 'unhealthy situation' that needed to be resolved in the England camp. Moores and Pietersen were believed to be in disagreement on several issues, Moores was removed as England's coach by the ECB, and Pietersen unexpectedly resigned as captain.

Under new coach Andy Flower and new Perminant captain Andrew Strauss England edged Australia 2-1 in the test series. After a draw at Cardiff, a win at Lords a draw at Edgbaston and a loss at Headingly it all came down to the final test at the Oval in which England thumped the Aussies by 177 runs to seal the win.

England secured their first victory at an ICC limited-overs tournament with a crushing seven-wicket win against Australia in the World Twenty20 final.

After a draw in the first test at the Gabba, Brisbane, England then cruised to an innings and 71 run victory to seal the second test at the Adelaide Oval. England then lost in the third test by 267 runs to level the series with two tests left. Australia then crumbled in the final tests and England retained the Ashes.
