    After the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem in 637 CE, Umayyad Caliphs commissioned the construction of the Dome of the Rock on the site.

    In 1099 the Crusaders called the Temple mount as "Templum Domini" and turned the Dome of the rock to a church, adding a cross on the dome. The Crusaders were driven out from Jerusalem by Saladin in 1187.

    The dome of rock was built in 687 A.D by Caliph Abd al-Malik. It was built in Jerusalem. The Dome of Rock was built because Muhammad made his Night Journey into the heavens and back to Mecca (Qur'an). The Dome of Rock was built over a sacred rock over and was considered holy before the arrival of Islam. Jews believe that the rock is where Abraham prepared to sacrifice Isaac.
