The beginning of the story opens up describing Toms relationship with his wife as miserable and their house is also a miserable so the dark clouds represent the unhappiness that is held over their lives.

The rising action begins when the devil offers Tom an offer for great fortune if he gives his soul to the devil and Tom rejects the offer to spite his wife. He then goes back on his word and accepts the devils offer.

The climax comes when Tom is now very wealthy but also very unhappy with his decision and often regrets agreeing to give up his soul for the devil and then one day he hears knocks at his door!
