The opening of the railway in 1882 brung many new people to the Brisbane area from the country, rural areas and other important places. Shorncliffe offered many facilities such as the swimming baths, holiday and hotel spots and to fish.

The Shorncliffe pier was first constructed recently after the opening of the railway due to the influx of visitors in the area. Also, the pier was built in foresight that Sandgate would become the port of Brisbane.

When first built, the Pier was the largest wooden structure in Bramble Bay. But when there was only lo tide, ferries could not not be accommodated. The pier was lengthened in 1883- 84.

Bathing enclosures were for the use of all guests to the pier and charged an entrance fee of one penny (one cent). There were two separate enclosures, one for the women and one for the men.

Starting from the year of 1955, the pier was beginning of the Gladstone Yacht race. This is a annual event that still occurs to this date.

The Shorncliffe pier was closed off from the public in March of 2012, due to safety concerns associated with the condition of the structure. many of the pier's structural aspects were found to be in such a poor condition that the structural failure was too high for it to be reopened.
