    The first pencil

    The first pencil can be dated back to 1564 when mines with graphite were discovered and mined out in Borrowdale England. The graphite replaced the lead used in the pencils ancestors a stylus. styluses were made of lead and would make a light mark just enough to read. Graphite improved the darkness of writing.
  • Mass Production

    The fist mass production plant for pencils was in Nuremberg Germany in 1662. pencil companies were rapidly increasing at this time.
  • America's First wooden pencil

    The first american wooden pencil was created by William Monroe in 1812. after that the pencil business in america boomed and started creating tons of wooden pencils.
  • Non colored pencils

    Originally pencils were not colored to show off there high quality wood casings.
  • Mechanical pencils

    The fist mechanical pencil was found on a wrecked ship in 1791 but the first refillable pencils with led were created in 1822 in Britain.
  • Colored pencils

    The first painted pencils were created in the early 1890's and were painted yellow
  • Better wood casings

    in the early 1900's pencils used a new kind of wood from places around the southeast part of America, but soon later they switched to incensed trees in California.
