The first case of covid detected in Spain was on 31 January 2021. It was a German patient admitted in La Gomera who tested positive for coronavirus. His condition was "mild" and he was infected, presumably after contacting an infected person in Germany.

Indoor face masks ceased to be mandatory on 20 April 2022, but were still mandatory in healthcare facilities, pharmacies and public transport.

The Spanish population started vaccination of the first dose on 27 December 2022. This was announced by the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa.

Face masks on public transport ceased to be mandatory on 7 February 2023. From then on, they will no longer be required on buses, trains, taxis, subways and aeroplanes.
