    The Cold War begins.
    The Cold War began with the Yalta conference which was held to make many decisions.The conference was held from February 4th until February 11th. One of the decisions was the dividing up of Germany. Also they discussed the formation of the United Nations. The Yalta conference led to many fronts of the Cold War.
  • The Postdam Conference is held at Cecilienhof

    The Postdam Conference was held from July 16th until August 2nd,1945. This conference was attended by the Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and the United States. The nations were represented by Joseph Stalin, Winstom Churchill, President Harry S. Truman and later Clement Attlee. The conference was held in order to figure out how to adminster punishment to the defeated Nazi Germany and to establish the post war order, peace treaty issues, and to counter the effects of war.

    Igor Gouzenko Defects from USSR to Canada, Providing Evidence of a Soviet Spy Ring in Western Countries.
    Igor Gouzenko, was a cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy to Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. Igor defected on September 5th, 1945 with 109 documents on Sovet espionage activities in the west. His defection exposed Joseph Stalin's efforts of stealing nuclear secrets. This is known as the Gouzenko affair, which often known as an event that triggered the Cold War.
  • War resumes between the communist party of China and the Kuomintang

    In Communist media and historyography this is referred to as the "War of Liberation." The U.S, assisted the KMT with millions of dollars of military supplies and equiptment. The U.S. also transported KMT troops from central China to the Northeast. President Truman described this as " using the Japanese to hold off the Communists."
  • The Truman Doctrine

    President Harry S. Truman created the Truman Doctrine. The Truman Doctrine was a set of principles of U.S, inland policy. In the Doctrine Truman declared that the U.S, as leader of the 'free world', must support capitalism worldwide and fight against communisim. George Marshall and Dean Acheson also helped Truman create the Truman Doctrine. These two men were influential associates of Truman.

    The Marshall Plan was the main plan of the U.S. to rebuild and create a stronger foundation for countries after World War Two. Georger Marshall, secretery of state, created The Marshall Plan. The Marshall Plan helped out many people in many of the countries
  • The Soviet Union tests it's first atomic bomb.

    The Soviet Union tests it's first atomic bomb.
    The first Soviet test was the RDS-1. This bomb was tested at Semipalatinsk. The RDS-1 was also called Joe-1 which was refernced to Joseph Stalin. The bomb was designed after The Fat Man Bomb, which was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The design was urged by Lavrenty Beria.
  • Establishment of the German Democratic Republic

    This was also called East Germany, which was ensured by a new constitution.The first leader of East Germany was Wilhelm Pieck. He turned out to be the only leader of East Germany.
  • The Schuman Declaration

    The Schuman Declaration is said to mark the true beginning of post-World War II. Also it marked the Franco-German cooperation. It also marked the re-integration into Western Germany.
  • The Battle of Osan

    This battle was the first interaction between the United States and North Korean forces during the Korean War. Around 3 a.m. Task Force Smith got to the positions selected for defense. A little after 7 a.m. a North Korean tank column was spotted, along with a few infantry, coming down the road. Then by 10:15 a.m. Task Force Smith and the 52nd continued on toward Osan.

    The battle began on September 15th, 1950. It ended around September 17th. This battle ended a winning streak by the invading North Korean People's Army. The majority of the ground forces were the Marines which were commanded by many people.

    Operation Courageous was a military operation that was performed by the U.S. army during the Korean War. This was designed to trap a broad number of Chinease and North Korean troops. The trap was set between the Han and the Imjin rivers, north of Seoul.
  • The Battle of Tiangle Hill

    The Battle of Tiangle Hill
    The battle of Triangle Hill was also known as operation showdown. This battle was a protracted military engagment duringn the Korean War. Two United Nations infrantry divisions, with the help of the U.S. Air Force, were against the People's Republic of China. The Battle of Triangle Hill was part of America's attempt to gain control of the "Iron Triangle."
  • Joseph Stalin Dies

    Joseph Stalin Dies
    It is probable that on March 1st, 1953 Stalin had a stroke after an all-night dinner in his Kuntsevo residence. The stroke was said to have paralyzed the right side of his body. Even though his guards thought that it was odd that Stalin did not leave his room, they were told not to disturb him. At 10:00 P.M. he was found lying on the floor of his room. The doctors arrived on March 2nd, but Stalin died on March 5th.
  • Korean Armistince Agreement

    The Korean War ended in an Armistince. So, niether side was able to claim victory. The truce still technically prevents North Korea and the U.S., along with South Korea, to resume the war. No peace treaty has ever been signed.
  • Warsaw Pact is signed

    The Warsaw Pact was a group of Comminist states in Central and Eastern Europe. It was signed in Warsaw, Poland on May 14th, 1955. This pact was created so that if any country in the pact became a victum of aggression, other countries in the pact would defend them.
  • Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1 satelitte

    Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1 satelitte
    The world's first Earth-orbiting artificial satelitte was Sputnik 1. Sputnik 1 was the first to be launched in a series of satelittes known as the Sputnik program. The unanticipated success of the Sputnik satelittle ignited the Space Race in the Cold War.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    The Bay of Pigs invasion lasted from April 17th, 1961 to April 19th, 1961. The invasion was an attempt by American trained Cuban exiles to invade southern Cuba. They had support from the U.S. government to overthrow Fidel Castro. Fidel Castro was the Cuban government. Unfortunately, the attempt was unsuccessful.

    The Berlin wall was a barrier that encircled West Berln from the German Democratic Republic. The wall seperated East and West Germany. This lasted for more than a quater of a century.
  • The Cuban Missle Crisis

    The Cuban Missle Crisis
    The Cuban Missle Crisis lasted from October 14th, 1962 until November 20th, 1962. This event was a confrontation between the United States, Cuba, and the Soviet Union. The Cuban and Soviet governments decided to put nuclear missles on Cuba to protect themeselves from the U.S. When the U.S. learned about this the government decided that they needed to be removed. This is said to be one of the major conflicts of the Cold War and is said to be the closest moment the Cold War came to a nuclear war.
