The Cold War

  • The Yalta Conference

    The Yalta Conference
Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met to plan the postwar world. Many of the agreements reached here later played an important role in causing the Cold War. The key issue discussed at the conference was Poland and which government had the right to govern. Churchill and Roosevelt thought that the Poles should be able to choose their own government but Stalin argued that invaders usually came through Poland. The compromise was a mix of both governments with free elections in the future.
  • The Yalta Conference Part 2

    The Yalta Conference Part 2
It was decided that Germany and Berlin would be split into 4 zones with France, Soviets, Britain, and US each controlling 1 zone. Stalin was pleased with this but also demanded heavy reparations to pay war damages. The agreement reached was that Germany would pay with trade goods and products half of it going to the Soviets. The Allies would remove industrial machinery, railroad cars, and other equipment as reparations as well.
