  • End of the White Primary

    End of the White Primary
    White Primaries were primary elections in the south that forbid any non-white voter from voting. The 1944 case of Smith Vs. Allwright was the Supreme Court decision that ruled the Texas White Primary was unconstitutional.
  • 1964 Governor's Race

    1964 Governor's Race
    Elis Arnall was the curent governor until 1946 when Eugene Talmage was elected. Before he could be sworn in as governor he died. Herman Talmadge was chosen as governor by the legislature due to the amount of write-in votes he got. Arnall thought the lieutenant governor should be the governor. Talmadge tried to "force" Arnall into resigning and him becoming governor. Arnall resigned. In March 1947, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled Thompson was governor until a special election. Talmadge won.

  • 1956 State Flag

    The confederate Battle Flag stripes were on the new falg.This was a backlash against the Brown v. Board of Education result.
  • Benjamin Mays

    Benjamin Mays
    Mays was several things. He was an author, leader, president. and a mentor. Mays published a book called "Seeking to Be a Christian is Race Relations. He was a important leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He was a minister. He was know for being the preident for years of Morehouse College in Atlanta. He was even a mentor to Martin Luther Kind Jr. Lastly, he made a trip to India, and he sponke to Mahatma Gandhi about civil rights in 1936.
  • Sibley Commsion

    Sibley Commsion
    The Sibley Commision was set up to determine Georgia's attitudes toward desegregating public schools. The comittee sent out surveys so they would know if people wanted schools to be segregate or not. The results of the survey led to the end of massive resistance to desegregation in the state.
  • SNCC

    SNCC
    During Feburary 1960 4 black college students refused to leave a lunch counter where they had been denied service.   • Hamilton Homes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA

    Hamilton Homes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA
    This two people became the first two African Americans accepted into UGA, a segregated souther college. Excuses such as "limited space" were used so that they wouldnt be admitted into the college. After applying several times they filed a civil suit against Danner for not admitting them. On January 9, 1961 they were finally admitted into UGA and enrolled for classes. It wasnt easy though, for they were harrased and were socially isolated.
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement

  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    On this day in history over 200,000 Americans came to the United States' capital for a political rally known as the March on Washington for freedom and work.   • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    This important document banned discrimination in public places. It provided for the integration of schools and other public facilities. Finally it because of this document that employment decrimination became illegal. This document was the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.
  • Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox
    Surprisingly he was not racist. He appointed more African Americans to government positions than all previous Georgia governors combined, including the first black officer in the Georgia State Patrol and the first black official to the state Board of Corrections. Though he did fight against the civil rights aims of the party.
  • Andrew Young

    Andrew Young
    In 1972 Andrew Young was elected into Congress . Just like Martin Luther King Jr., he believed in human rights. Also, in 1977 Jimmy Carter named him the ambassador to the UN (United Nations). He used this to his advantage, and he made Americas foriegn policy much more focused on human rights.
  • Maynard Jackson

    Maynard Jackson
    He was the first African American vice mayor. Soon after, He became the first mayor of Atlanta that was African American.One of his noble achievment was building the immense new terminal at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport with significant minority participation.
