Chapters 1-13, 1-86
Jerry Renault tries out for the football team. Archie, a leader of the Vigil's, decides to make Jerry have an assignment. Obie, one of the Vigil's, doesn't want to. Archie gets asked by Leon, his brother and a teacher at his school, to help with the chocolate sale. Jerry talks about his mothers' death and how life is now. The chocolate sale begins. Jerry gets summoned to recieve his assignment. Jerry says no to the chocolate sale.

Chapters 14-26, 87-177
Chapter 14 talks about three guys who are trying to sell chocolate. Archie pretends to have a picture of someone. Jerry still says no to the chocolates because apparently that was his assignment. Other kids follow in Jerry's footsteps and quit selling chocolate. Goober quits the football team. Archie and Leon get in a fight. But, Archie has dirt on Leon. Archie tells Jerry to say yes during roll call.

Chapters 27-39, 178-263
The Vigil's choose a junior for an assignment and it doesn't end well. The Vigil's beat up Jerry basically. Janza calls Jerry a "queer". Archie gets Jerry to fight Janza to get even for the chocolates. Jerry passes out. jerry ends up with a broken jaw. then Brother Leon and The Vigil's are in the clear and don't get in trouble. Obie then tells Archie that karma will get him.
