The first inhabitants of the British Isles were the Celts. Very little from Celtic survives in Modern English. Some place names such as Leeds, River Avon, South Downs. The words 'Downs' means hills, which also survive in the term 'sand dune', a hill of sand, from Celtic 'dun'.
