The California Missions

  • Mission San Diego de el Cala was founded

    Founded by Junipero Serra in July 16, 1769.It was named after Saint Didacus of San Nicolas del Puerto, Spain
  • San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo was founded

    Founded by Father Junipero Serra in June 3, 1770.Named After Saint Charles Borromeo of Arona, (Bishop of Milan) Italy (Patron saint of Bishops) and the Carmel River that flows near by.
  • San Antonio de Padua was founded

    Founded in 1771. Named for Saint Anthony of Lisbon,Portugal and Padova, Italy (Patron saint of lost articles,the poor, and the starving).
  • San Gabriel Arcángel was founded

    Founded in September 8, 1771 moved 5 miles to its present site by 1805. Named for the Archangel Gabriel (Patron saint of broadcasters and diplomats).
  • Mission San Luis, Obispo de Tolosa was founded

    Founded in September 1, 1772 by Junipero Serra. Named for Saint Louis of Anjou Bishop of Toulouse, France.
  • San Francisco de Asis - Dolores Mission was founded

    Founded by Fray Francisco Palou in June 29, 1776. Nick Named "Dolores". Named for saint of birds, animals, conservationists and ecologists. This mission is the oldest structure in San Francisco in the heart of San Francisco
  • San Juan Capistrano was founded

    Founded in November 1, 1776. Nick named the "Jewel of the Missions". Named for Saint John of Capistran, Italy.
  • Santa Clara de Asís was founded

    Founded by Father Junipero Serra in January 12, 1777. Named for Saint Clare of Assisi (a woman), Italy (Founder of the Order of Poor Clares, and patron saint of television) This mission is number 8 in the chain of 21 Alt California Missions.
  • San Buenaventura

    Founded by Junipero Serra in March 31, 1782. Nicked named " Mission by the Sea". Named for Saint Bonaventure (John Fidanza), of Bagnoreggio, Etruria, Italy (The Seraphic Doctor).
  • Mission Santa Barbra was founded

    Founded in December 4, 1786 by Fathers Lausen and Paterra and was the first established after the death of Father Serra. Tenth in the California chain of missions. Named for Saint Barbara of Greece
