    It is widely believed that in the siege of Caffa there was some sort of biological warfare attack that brought The Black Death to Europe.     The Black Death

    The Black Death lasted for around 5 years. In the black death there were 3 different types of plague, Bubonic plague, Pneumonic plague and Septicaemic plague. These affected the lymph nodes, the lungs and the blood respectively.
    It is estimated that 30 to 60 percent of the European population was killed off by the black death.

    Fleet of "Death Ships"

    In October of 1347 a fleet of "Death Ships" arrived at the Sicilian port of Messina and brought with them the plague and many dead or sick sailors.

    Jewish Massacares

    Many thousands of Jewish people were massacred between 1348 and 1349 as European citizens believed that the plague was a punishment from the Christian God.

    Quarantine

    People implemented quarantine into their strategies to protect against the sick. Quarantine comes from the Italian word "Quarantina" which means 40 days. This concept of quarantine was first imposed in The Republic of Ragusa, Dalmatia (modern day Dubrovnik, Croatia)

    Damaged Feudal System

    Towards the end of The Black Death serfs started to demand wages for their work due to the low population and shortage of workers. This meant that the nobles had to pay the the poorer people and it improved their living standards drastically.
