  • Temperance Movement

    Temperance Movement
    A movement created by women to get rid of alcohol, for it caused their husbands to act violent, and/or lose their jobs and family.
    This occured in the early 1800s. Major women involved were Susan B. Anthony, Eliabeth Cady Stanton and Carrie Nation.
  • Cult of Domesticity

    Upper and middle class women who during the 19th century who had a social position and were to give their kids rligious and moral education and no more that that of whats outside of their home; i.e., politics business.

  • Second Great Awakening

    The second great awakening A series of religious revivals that were more focused on Methodism and Baptism. Based on doing good deeds and tolerance for Protestants. There were more conversion in women, blacks, and Native Americans. More reforms were created, morals, and temerance movements.

  • William Lloyd Garrison

    William Lloyd Garrison
    An American abolitionist, social reformer and journalist. Known for his newspaper, "The Liberator" (1831). He was one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Supported women.

  • Adams-Onis Treaty

    This is where Spain gave Florida to the US for $5,000,000. It also reonounced any claims on Texas.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The north and south couldn't agree whether Maine or Missouri should be slave states or free; so they created this compromise to make a border of the latitude 36˚ 30' in the Louisiana Territory. Any states above that would be submitted as free states and any under as slave states. Maine was a free state while Missouri turned into a slaved state. (Doesnt say exactly when it happened in the year of 1820)
  • American Colonization Society

    A society that saw slavery in a negative way. It was formed to send back the slaves to Africa where they can be free, i.e., Liberia.

    A foriegn policy that stated that Europe couldn't iterfere with any of the affairs of the US, or any other countries in the western hemisphere
  • Bank War

    Jackson believe that the Bank had too much money and power, so he vetoed the second bank and created pet banks.

  • Eli Whitney

    Eli Whitney
    An inventor who created the cotton gin, and came up with the interchangeble parts.

    Horace Mann
    Horace Mann was an educator from MA, who started reforms that involed public education.

  • Whig Party

    An American political party that was made to go against president Andrew Jackson and the Democrats. They were for the national bank, protective tarrifs, and federal aid for internal improvements.

  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Led by Nat Turner, he created a slave rebellion in Virginia. Total of deaths as 55-65 white deaths. This caused a widespread of fear for slave owners, which made them be more aggressive with heir slaves.

  • Manifest Destiny

    A popular expression in the 1840s where many people believed that the U.S. was ment to be from "sea to sea," from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean; in other words, that they should expand.
  • Frederick Douglas

    Frederick Douglas
    He was an escaped slave, who later became leader of the abolitionist movement. He published the famous North Star in the early 1830s. Wrote an Autobiography called, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. which was published in 1845.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    An agreement between President Polk and the Mexican government for Mexico to cede California and New Mexico to the US and that the Rio Grande as the boundary of Texas. With this, it officially ended the Mexican War,which gave the USTexas, New Mexico, and California in exchange for $15 million
  • Seneca Falls Convention

    Seneca Falls Convention
    A convention that was taken place in New York. It lasted two days, where women would mimik the Deloration of Independance to gain the same rights as men, especially the right to vote. This started the feminist movement. Major roles were played by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Suzan B. Anthony.

    a group of American painters in the middle 1800s which worked mainly in romanticism on landscapes especially by the Hudson River.

    North and South fought for the state of Kansas-Nebraska territory becaue it was above the Missouri line, which led the north to believe that it was their territory; but also at the same situation where Missouri was, which led the south thinking other wise.
