MicroSD was first developed and approved as a standard by SanDisks. The microSD card debuted at about one-sixth the size and half the thickness of the SD card. An SD card measures 32 by 24 by 2.1 mm, while a microSD card is 15 by 11 by 1 mm.

Microsoft released the Xbox 360, the second generation of their popular game console. The Xbox 360 launched a year earlier than the PlayStation 3, giving it a vast head-start for building a user base. The Xbox 360's design also allowed it to achieve a much lower retail price point.
