History Of Coming Of Age Films

  • The Breakfast Club

    The Breakfast Club
This American comedy-drama, written and produced by John Huges, sees five students report for a full day's detention on a Saturday (to their disgust.) Despite their differences as a group, they begin to form friendships as the day progresses and end the film with a positve feeling in comparison to the beginning of the film. The audience demographic for this film would be teenagers as they will be able to relate to their high school problems.
  • Ferris Bueller's day off

    Ferris Bueller's day off
Ferris Bueller a high school student who has an uncanny ability to convincing his parents that he is ill and unable to go to school. He spends his day off in Chicago with his girlfriend and friend. The successes of this film comes from Ferris' unique role in the movie to act as an in-movie character as well as talking directly to the audience.. Given the plot, i would say the targer audience for this film would be teenagers, specifically 15-18 year olds due to the engaging opening sequence.
  • Mean Girls

    Mean Girls
Mean Girls demonstrates the friction between girls at high school. However, by the end, it gives an element of hope to the less popular people at school as the original nerdy girl finishes the film as a popular. The target audience for this film is girls aged 13-21 because they will be able to relate to the narrative best. As well as this, the opening sequence also engages them as It has multiple shots and flash, engaging, on-screen graphics.

    Superbad
The comdey emulates male teenagers' problems to impress girls with their ability to get alcohol with fake ID. Hill and Cera get excited by being invited to a party for the first time but are aprehensive to use fake ID to get alcohol. They convince their nerdy friend to get the alcohol but he fails to do it and they get into all sorts of situations. This film is aimed at young male adults who can relate to this situation. The on-screen graphics in the opening credits will further their interest.
  • Juno

    Juno
A comedy-drama based in America where a teenage girl is faced with an unwanted pregnancy as well as the upcoming adult life after she finishes high school. I particularly like this film because it is filmed over four seasons with each season often foreshadowing the storyline. The target audience for this film would be young adults who may be able to relate to this situation. Also, the opening sequence could define the target audience because it contains lots of juvenile colours.
  • 17 Again

    17 Again
17 Again sees Matthew Perry turn back into his high school self and is faced by problems such as his son being bullied at school, for example. In addition, Perry, who is now Zac Efron, sees his wife easily moving on from their divorce but is completely helpless. The film ends with Efron finally admitting to his wife who he is and wants her back. Whilst chasing her, he again changes back to Matthew Perry where his wife forgives him and they go back to their marriage.
  • The Hangover

    The Hangover
This comdey sees four guys go to Vegas for their bachelor party. After accidentally taking rooflin, they wake up having to piece together their night and find groom, Doug, just hours before his wedding. This comedy is a very original and unique film that plays on every character's flaws to make us viewers laugh throughout. Target audiences for this film would range from 16-40 year olds as it gives a teasing insight to the narrative from the opening sequence.
  • 21 Jump Street

    21 Jump Street

Once they pass they go on an undercover mission to high school where they find themselves in funny situations. Target audience for this film would be teens as the narrative is relatable for teens.
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
After recently starting high school, Charlie finds it hard to connect with people in his school. However, he eventually makes friends with two people and starts to enjoy his teenage years. The target audience for this film would be teens as they will be able to relate to the narrative.
  • Boyhood

    Boyhood
Boyhood is a film based on a teenage boy who had been filmed throughout his childhood in order to give an honest representation of a teenage boy's childhood. I especially like this film because it is a genuine character without any exaggerated situations or storylines. The target audience for this film could vary due to the fact that it isn't a particular genre in itself. Having said that, I think this film would engage adults (30-45) as it shows how the new generations are growing up.
