In 1884, the first public zoo in New South Wales (NSW) opened on the Billy Goat site in Sydney.
The Zoological Society of NSW, which was established in March 1879, operates the Swamp in Moore Park. -
After a trip to Germany in 1908, Albert Sherbourne Le Souef, the zoo's elected Secretary, returned with a vision for a new Sydney zoo focused on Hamburg Zoo's bar-less exhibits. Moore Park's location has been too limited and unsuitable for the view. The zoo was looking for a new location. -
The NSW Government allocated 43 acres of land north of the harbour, known as Ashton Park, on April 24, 1912. In April 1916, another 9 acres were granted.

The New Zoological Gardens Trust, which later became the Taronga Zoological Park Trust, took over management of the zoo in 1913.

Taronga Zoo was officially opened on October 7th, 1916.
