After the conquest continued the colonization directed and executed by the missionaries. Franciscans and Jesuits fulfilled specific missions.
During the colony, Tarapoto, together with Lamas and Moyobamba, served as a center for colonizing, religious, administrative and cultural irradiation of that time. Also as a nucleus of native exploitation in the obrajes, reducciones and as beasts of burden. Due to its strategic location, Tarapoto was the seat of colonization of the northern jungle.
  • FOUNDATION OF TARAPOTO

    FOUNDATION OF TARAPOTO
It was founded on August 20, 1782 by the Spanish bishop Baltazar Jaime Martínez de Compagnon y Bujanda.
Its beginnings date from the explorations carried out by the Chancas, who when conquered by the Incas, led a revolution commanded by the caudillo Ancohallo.
They settled in the surroundings of the Suchiche Lake, where the Taraputus palm tree abounded, a name that the Spanish bishop would later use to found the city of Tarapoto.

Apparently, what Martinez de Compagnón founded, was not a city but a Curate dependent on Lamas. For the time of Tarapoto it was a small town of native residents mostly in the small town of Cumbaza.
Since September 14, 1906, the city is part of the department of San Martín.
